The thawing of Castelluccio di Norcia

As usual, every year during this period I go to Castelluccio di Norcia to photograph the thawing ice.
Castelluccio, located in the middle of the Monti Sibillini National Park in the central Apennines between the Regions of Marche and Umbria, is famous worldwide for its explosion of multi-colored flowers which takes place between June and July each year.
But very few people know that this location offers magnificent landscapes even during other seasons.

I decided to leave one Sunday afternoon with the intention of capturing a sunset, the night and a sunrise.
What better occasion to test my new Manfrotto Pro Light 3N1-25 PL backpack: compact, roomy, durable and lightweight.
On my numerous photo trips I usually use backpacks that are much larger because my gear consists of 2 camera bodies and various lenses, but for short trips I prefer to travel light and that’s why I chose this comfortable backpack.

I find the upper compartment really convenient for my filters, as is the PC compartment and all the various pockets which, for those who take photographs, are never enough.

I arrived at Piana di Castelluccio at around 5 p.m. and realized that the Landscape is exactly as I hoped it would be; i saw that the first few small lakes, created by the the thaw, had formed and the first Crocus flowers were blooming.

Ar around 6 p.m. I decided to move to Pian Piccolo, the valley opposite the Pian Grande where snow and ice still are the protagonists, to capture the sunset.

As soon as darkness set in I decided to take a break and go to a country inn to savor a good lentil soup, local specialties and to wait for the arrival of night.
Yes, because I love to photograph the stars, the Milky Way and the colorful shades that are created by the night’s light pollution.
The conditions were ideal and there’s even some moonlight to give a helping hand.
Unfortunately towards midnight the sky became overcast, but I now was there and I couldn’t go home so I went to the Piana with the hope that sooner or later the sky would open up. Despite everything I began taking some shots….

The night came to an end and unfortunately the sky remained overcast for the entire night.
Slowly the daylight invaded the landscape, the Castelluccio lights went out and life began once again…

The photo session didn’t go as I had planned, but spending the night in this magical place, regenerated my spirit… a place that helps you find peace with yourself.
I put all my gear back in the backpack, which I must say has gone beyond my expectations; it’s comfortable and roomy and in addition to the camera body I had another 3 lenses. This is really a great product.

For those who don’t know, during the summer Castelluccio is full of a multitude of colors as a result of the flowering lentil, which along with other flowering weeds, creates this magnificent spectacle.
